Burn-in name of layer name/source file?

Is there a script that can automatically display the name of layer or the source file? In order to keep track of what shots are being used where, I'd like to burn in the name of the layer or source file that's currently on-screen. It would be helpful in tracking 3D render versions and different takes of video.

(I know this could get messy with a lot of composited layers, but for simple, thin projects I think it could be really handy.)
