Color Picker with swatches on dockable UI

Hi,
I've made a dockable UI panel and need to add adjustable color swatches to it. These swatches act like buttons, so when clicked they open the color picker and after a new color is selected, the swatch updates to the new color. I've managed to get the majority of it working thanks to these links :

However after selecting the new color, it doesn't update in my UI panel.
Is there a limitation with UI panels? Would appreciate any help getting this to work, thanks in advance!
