im looking for a way to select a comp (template) and create a duplicate (wokring comp) that will also identify, duplicate, and replace all nested comps so as to create a complete dupe that does not rely on any of the originals precomps.

anything out there? at least as a starting point?

thanks

This would be a great tool. At first I thought it might be simple to script. There is a problem that I don't see a good way around however. Unless they fixed this in AE7, there is no way to replace usage of a project item in a comp. When you dupe a comp you normally then ALT-drag (or ALT+CTRL+/) the new comp into where you want it replaced. There isn't a good workaround for this that doesn't involve messy pre-comping or nulls. This is a major pain and I hope they fix this limitation in scripting soon.

The only simple way I see this working is if your precomps don't have any effects or properties modified.

yeah thats the thing.

the whole point would be to replace the comp layers b/c they had properties that are modified...

oh well, thought it was worth a try
