Oscilloscope Effect

Hey All
I'm trying to figure out how to create an oscilloscope in After Effects. I'm starting from scratch and trying a few approaches that aren't yielding much results. I'm looking for the right combination of expressions in order to create something like this:

I've already experimented with expressions that respond to the amplitude of an .mp3, but I just not sure what the best way to get this look is. Hoping someone's a few steps ahead of me.
